“If the eyes are the windows to your soul, then your mouth is the gateway to your overall health,” according to Women’s Health Magazine. Check you mouth for changes in color or texture. Such changes can signal that alls not well with your anatomy.

Women’s Health Magazine Jan 2012 suggests checking your mouth at least once per week for these conditions.

Tongue
Look for: pale color
Might mean: You have iron- deficiency anemia, which affects one in five women. Without enough iron — which helps produce energy and maintain the immune system — your body cant make hemoglobin, the pigment in red blood cells that gives your tongue its ruby color. You should eat plenty of leafy green veggies, meat, seafood, and beans or take an iron supplement. If you suspect you are anemic, see your doctor for a diagnostic blood test.

Saliva
Look for: thick, stringy saliva
Might mean: You have xerostomia (dry mouth). The likely culprit is prescription or OTC medications, which may include allergy, pain, and cold medications. These types of medications often affect the amount of water flowing in and out of cells. Left untreated, dry mouth can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and oral yeast infections. You should talk to your doctor about your medications and dry mouth. Be sure to drink plenty of water, chew sugar free gum, and try brushing with children toothpaste. Children toothpastes typically have fewer drying ingredients. If you are still parched, spritz an OTC mouth moisturizer or talk with Dr. Davis at the Perfect Smile Tulsa about prescribing a saliva simulator.
Gums
Look for: bright red color, puffiness, or small abscesses
Might mean: Gum disease. About 23 percent of women aged 30 to 54 have gum disease. Check for blood or pus coming out of your gums, especially while you are brushing your teeth.
Such signs could signal a bacterial infection. Keep in mind, gum disease can also be a sign of something more serious, like diabetes. Be sure to maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings at the Perfect Smile Tulsa.

How do you plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day? It seems everywhere you turn in Tulsa, restaurants, florists and gift shops are decorated with pink and red for the holiday.

Even if you brush your teeth daily, you may still have dangerous bacteria growing inside your mouth. Not only could that lead to periodontitis, but studies also find a link between poor oral hygiene and major health issues. Here are 5 ways poor oral care can harm your health.

It May Hurt Your Heart

People with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease compared to those don’t have periodontitis. Researchers believe harmful bacteria from your mouth enters your blood stream and attaches to fatty plaques in your heart’s blood vessels, leading to inflammation and upping your risk of clots that can trigger heart attacks.

Your Memory May Suffer

Some research suggests there may be a tie between poor oral health and an increased risk of dementia. Experts think oral bacteria may spread to the brain through cranial nerves that connect to the jaw or through the bloodstream, and may contribute to the type of plaque that’s been linked to Alzheimer’s.

It Might Impact Your Blood Sugar

People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than those without diabetes. Research has found gum disease can make it harder to control your blood sugar, and that treating it helps improve diabetes symptoms.

It May Affect Your Breathing

Gum disease may increase your risk of getting respiratory infections, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia, according to the Journal of Periodontology. The infections are thought to be caused by bacteria inside the mouth being inhaled into your lungs, possibly causing airways to become inflamed.

It Might Make it Harder to Have a Baby

Researchers in Western Australia discovered that women of childbearing age with gum disease took an average of just over seven months to become pregnant, while those without gum disease were able to conceive in two months less time. Other research concludes that pregnant women with gum disease may be more apt to experience a miscarriage.

At the Perfect Smile Tulsa we find gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, to be one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults. It is also frequently linked to the control of diabetes. Gum disease is an infection in the gum tissues and bone that keep teeth in place. It has also been linked to heart disease and strokes.

Dr. Davis at the Perfect Smile Tulsa has years of experience in detecting the signs of early gum disease in diabetic patients. He works closely with our patients to ensure they maintain healthy teeth and gums.

There are two major stages of periodontal disease, gingivitis and periodontitis. People with diabetes tend to develop gum disease more frequently than others. However, if it is diagnosed in the early stage (gingivitis), it can be treated and reversed. If treatment is not received, a more serious and advanced stage (periodontitis) may follow which includes bone loss and is irreversible.

Factors That Link Diabetes to Gum Disease

Studies show that people with insufficient blood sugar control seem to develop gum disease more frequently and more severely than people who have good management over their diabetes.

Diabetes slows circulation, which can also make the gum tissues more susceptible to infections.

Diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection, which increases the probability of the gums becoming infected.

High glucose levels in saliva promote growth of bacteria that cause gum disease.

People with diabetes who smoke are far more likely to develop gum disease than people who smoke and do not have diabetes.

Poor oral hygiene is a major factor in gum disease for everyone, but it is even more so for a person with diabetes.

Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease

Red and swollen gums

Gums that tend to bleed easily

Gums separating from the teeth

Loose teeth

Frequent bad breath

Change in the way your teeth fit together

Change in the way partials or dentures fit

Prevention

Maintain good control over your blood sugar levels.

Do not smoke.

Maintain good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups.

Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet.

Many ask if there is a connection between a sinus infection and a toothache. The answer is yes.

A sinus infection, commonly known as sinusitis or inflammation can cause a toothache. This is especially true for the upper rear teeth because they are so close to the sinuses. In fact, pain in the upper teeth is a very common symptom with sinus conditions.

If you have a persistent toothache, consult Dr. Davis at the Perfect Smile Tulsa. Dr. Davis treats many patients with toothaches. He will examine your teeth and determine the possible cause of your toothache. For example, he will check to see if your pain is due to periodontal disease, tooth grinding, cavities or dental abscesses.

If he rules out a dental cause for the toothache, he will ask you to consult your physician. Your physician can then consider whether a sinus condition or other underlying medical problem is contributing to the toothache.

At the Perfect Smile Tulsa, we know maintaining a healthy diet over the holiday season can be a difficult task. After all, who can resist the tasty temptations of the season? With Aunt May’s fudge, Grandma’s divinity, and everybody else offering you candy, chocolate covered pretzels and peppermint sticks, it’s impossible to say “no thanks” every single time. But with each nibble trouble lurks: every time you enjoy such tasty treats the bacteria in your mouth feast on sugar—at your expense. The sugar turns into acid which eats away at the enamel on your teeth. Then, you start getting cavities.

So beware of the holiday goodies this year. Rather than indulge in such sweets try a suggestion from our friends at the American Dental Association. The ADA recommends you eat nuts or dried fruit instead, which are a nice alternative to sugars and have a greater nutritional value. Moreover, they can satisfy your sweet tooth! Better yet, both nuts and fruit are an excellent source of fiber and act as an appetite suppressant. In addition, nuts contain nutrients that contribute to a healthy immune system like Vitamin E, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B9. Consumption of nuts rich in omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to reducing heart disease and lowering blood pressure.

But if you simply must indulge in all the candies, goodies, and chocolaty goodness this holiday season, remember to brush your teeth as soon as possible after eating. Give us a call if you have any questions.

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas this year?

It is certainly the most wonderful time of the year, with Christmas parties and gifts to look forward to – but you don’t want your smile to let you down.

Whether it is from drinking too much wine, tea or coffee – stains can build up on your teeth over time and cause your smile to lose its sparkle. But don’t despair, although we can’t make it snow, the Perfect Smile Tulsa can deliver white teeth on demand and help you to keep them white for life. So give us a call and let us help you make your white Christmas dreams come true!

And now we are offering a 15% discount on teeth whitening for appointments made in December.

Not all whitening procedures are appropriate for all people. The Hygienists at the Perfect Smile Tulsa can help you determine which method is best for your case.

ZOOM!/Sapphire In-Office Procedure
This is a 1 1/2 hours in-office procedure which will whiten your teeth an average of 2 to 4 shades immediately. As after most whitening methods, you’ll need to refrain from eating staining foods or drinks. This method is better suited for younger adult teeth, which are more readily affected by the whitening process and for those willing to restrict staining foods. Great for people who want whiter teeth – NOW! Cost includes custom made- for- you whitening mouth trays for home maintenance.

Deep Bleaching
This is a combination of 3 in-office procedures and 2 weeks of home whitening, and is a great answer for:
Hard to whiten or older teeth which have been stained
Those who want the whitest-white possible
Those who want a longer lasting whitening outcome without dietary restrictions
People who have sensitive teeth
The procedure starts with an office visit where impressions are made for your custom trays. The next appointment you’ll come back to have your teeth readied for the bleach and desensitized, and pick up your custom mouth trays to be used at home. This is followed by 2 weeks of at-home whitening and then another in-office whitening/desensitizing session. Your teeth will be their whitest white!
Pearlywhite For Life!
For people who only want a little brightening up, or who want to maintain ZOOM!/Sapphire whitening results, this is our FREE whitening gel given to you as our gift each time you come in within two weeks of your due date for your cleaning appointments. You’ll also receive free “boil-n-bite” mouth trays to put the bleach into. If you would like custom made trays, we’re happy to make those for you for a modest fee. Impressions can be taken at your cleaning appointment and trays will be ready in a couple of days for you to pick up.

If you have been thinking about giving yourself the gift of teeth whitening for Christmas or if you are thinking about teeth whitening as a gift for someone special, please call the Perfect Smile Tulsa. We are ready to put the “jolly” back into your smile.

At the Perfect Smile Tulsa we have found oral sedation dentistry to be beneficial in treating patients who are very apprehensive about receiving dental treatment and who often tell us they have been avoiding going to the dentist because of anxiety or fear. Avoiding the dentist is not good because it can ultimately lead to advanced disease and the need for expensive treatments that otherwise could be avoided. This is why the Perfect Smile Tulsa offers oral sedation dentistry.

Oral Sedation Dentistry, sometimes referred to as Sleep Dentistry, provides a safe, effective way to alleviate dental anxiety and provide patients with the treatment they need.

Dr. Mark Davis is a Tulsa sedation dentist who is compassionate and cares about his patients and is not judgmental at all. In fact, the entire staff at the Perfect Smile Tulsa is happy to make you as comfortable as possible, both physically and emotionally, which means we go to great lengths to show you that we genuinely care about every appointment you have with us.

What is Oral Sedation and How Does it Work?

Oral sedation dentistry is now the most common technique used in the United States to calm patient fears. Prescription medication is used to induce a drowsy, relaxed feeling. Due to the relaxing effects of the medication, patients must have a friend or family member bring them to the dental office and return them home.

During oral sedation dentistry your vital signs will be monitored. Often the medications create such a comfortable experience that many patients do not remember the visit; it is as if they slept through the treatment. In reality, oral sedation dentistry maintains a level of consciousness in the patient for safety and cooperation.

Who are the best candidates for Oral Sedation Dentistry?

Anyone who has dental anxiety or fear of going to the dentist
Anyone who experiences difficulty getting numb
Anyone with very sensitive teeth
Anyone who have extensive dental needs
Anyone who experiences extreme discomfort with needles and shots
